In Cold Blood by Truman Capote

A little dark, but it’s a classic.

What are the keys to avoiding burnout?

First, you have to have a long-term perspective. Most people burn out because they have a short sighted vision of time. When starting a business you need to be able to pull back and step outside of it to move forward and gain clarity. People who work IN their business hardly have the energy to focus on the bigger picture.

If Lauryn and I were only doing the podcast every day, over and over, and not looking at analytics or audience comments or brainstorming where the show could go, we’d be stuck where we started, and burnt out.
Set realistic boundaries and goals, have a long-term approach and be patient with the process. Also, be honest with yourself: Do you really like what you’re doing? Are you only doing it for money? If the answer to both those questions is YES, then you’ll burnout very quickly.

What’s the most important management skill to lead a business to success?

Personally, I take the approach of extreme ownership. Every single thing that ‘goes wrong’ in the business is my fault. I’m the first person to take the blame, and I’ve noticed that it creates a culture where colleagues want to help correct any issue and lend a helping hand. Another approach that works well is, as a manager, people don’t work for you, you work for them.

It’s important to build a culture where people feel happy, inspired, heard and supported. If you keep people happy and feeling respected, they’ll give you their best. As the head of a company you have to be the source of calm, no matter what kind of turbulence is going on. With that, you have an obligation to protect the culture you create, which means if you have a bad apple, you have to let them go, no matter how far up the chain they are.

Do you have any real estate tips?

I’ve said before that I don’t consider owning a primary residence an asset, I see it as a liability. Paying rent is fixed and it’s the most you’ll ever have to pay. Paying a mortgage is the least you’ll ever pay because you have maintenance, repairs and various other expenses. My advice is if you can’t afford the down payment twice, forgo the purchase and put money into renting. The outcome of buying and selling is never guaranteed unless you can stay put for approximately 7 years.

Real estate isn’t a great investment for most people. If you’re looking at buildings and commercial space, remember you’ll have tenants, tenants come with problems and you’ll essentially be a landlord. I think a far better investment is index funds, especially if you’re just starting to invest. Then invest in a business, then maybe real estate if you’re determined to get into it. It’s important to have a diversified portfolio.

If you’re interested in all of this, I highly recommend listening to Katy Song from Domain Money on the show. She breaks things down so they’re simple and easy to understand, with tangible tips to start investing. Katy very generously offered all our listeners a free 30 minute strategy session. There is no reason not to do this. They can help you build an actionable plan so you can reach your goals. Use this link to book your free session.

How to Giggle by Hannah Berner and Paige DeSorbo

Loving this book and so happy for Hannah and Paige and all they’ve accomplished. If you want to not take life too seriously, find humor in the mundane, and love their podcast, then this book is for you. You can also listen to Paige on The HIM & HER Show.

How do I get glowing skin?

There are so many things you can try. First, you need to make sure you’re sleeping, eating and hydrating properly (I recommend Beauty Salt). Once you have that down, these are my tips:

Exfoliation

You want to exfoliate dead skin cells from your face (and body) so that your skincare products can penetrate better and in turn, give you better results. Try:

+ Shaving your face with TSC’s shaving cream (you can even use it as a mask treatment). It’s hydrating and leaves your skin soft and supple. Removing peach fuzz and dead skin cells with a facial razor is one of the keys to radiant skin.

+ Mara algae enzyme cleansing oil (it gently exfoliates with fruit enzymes). If you want to learn more on double cleansing, there’s a tutorial here.

+ Products like Dr. Dennis Gross peel pads or Dermalogica’s Milkfoliant (good for sensitive skin).

Hydration

+ Depuffing oil is very nice to use for your facial massage. It’s non-greasy and gets right into the skin for instant hydration.

+ Skinceuticals B5 gel is one I use every day. It contains hyaluronic acid so your skin really feels nourished and replenished.

+ Caffeinated SPF has the perfect tint and we made sure the formula was very hydrating. It contains Vitamin E and squalene so you won't get that dry, cracked feeling other mineral sunscreens give you.

+ Primally Pure Everything Mist is the perfect finishing touch that gives you this dewy look because it’s actually made to hydrate your skin.

Try some hydrating masks too. These ones were recommended to me by Gracie Norton and they really help hydrate and plump your skin overnight. A lot of these items are on sale right now for the last day of the Sephora sale, so it’s a great time to stock up on favorites or try something new.

What are your fat loss tips while maintaining a social life?

First, try to plan activities instead of dinners and lunches. Play some tennis, join a workout group, ask a friend for a walk or hike, bring your own picnic to the park or the beach. There are lots of ways to be social and catch up with friends that don’t involve eating and drinking. That said, it can be hard to avoid if that's part of your life and what you like to do for fun.

If you drink alcohol, I’d opt for drinks with little to no sugar like tequila with soda and fresh lime, or if you love cocktails make some modifications. Ask for half the amount of simple syrup, alcohol and/or juice.

When it comes to food, I personally like to get a burger wrapped in lettuce (with extra jalapenos), or share a pasta dish so you’re not eating the whole thing. Try to eat protein before carbs if you can. Otherwise, remember to enjoy yourself, and don’t feel guilty about having some bread and butter or creamy pasta. I will say, be aware of salads at restaurants. They aren’t as low calorie/low fat as you may think.

This is just what works for me.

Would love to hear more about your views of social media usage, being an influencer.

It’s part of my job and serves a purpose. Social media can be extremely useful, but also really harmful. That’s why it’s up to you what you consume. There are very few accounts that I consume and they’re either entertaining, inspiring or educational. For business, social media is amazing, but you have to remember it’s a highlight reel. It's like a movie set and not everything is as it seems.

As an influencer it’s an incredible platform to connect with your audience, get their feedback and provide education on new products. Saying that, I’ve been outspoken about how absence is just as important as presence and I don’t feel the need to be scrolling or posting every single second of the day.
